Acne
in many cases of mild to moderate severity are well suited to effective
treatments such as Salicylic Acid, a form of BHA's (beta hydroxy
acids). This agent is used for treatment of mild to severe comedonal
acne (non-inflammatory lesions). Salicylic acid is also helpful
as a renewing agent for scar treatment.
These treatments are convenient to use, safe and effective. Four
clinical studies support efficacy and safety of Salicylic Acid in
concentrations less than 3% and renders them among effective acne
treatments. Adverse reactions to Salicylic Acid are generally limited
to slight irritations occurring in a minority of treated patients.
Severity of acne is always a determinant factor for its treatment.
Use of salicylic acid for treatment of non-inflammatory lesions
is indicated, alone or in combination with other modalities.

A study on effective
acne treatments done by Davis DA and et al attests that adult acne
patients without gross skin disorders are at minimal risk of adverse
systemic effects from routine use of topical products containing
2% Salicylic Acid, most popular form of BHA's.
Many studies support
efficacy of Salicylic Acid in adult acne treatment and acne scars
treatment, it reduces the number of microcomedones and counteracts
plugging of the follicles. It is also effective in healthy women
who take oral contraceptive without any adverse effect.
In three placebo-controlled
studies and a comedolytic assay, salicylic acid pads reduced the
number of primary acne lesions and thereby the number and severity
of all lesions associated with adult acne. Comparative studies of
salicylic acid have shown it to be superior such effective acne
treatments as benzoyl peroxide.
Adverse reactions to salicylic acid are generally limited to mild,
local irritation occurring in a minority of patients.
Beta hydroxy acids
are another group of cell turnover accelerators which are derivative
of aspirin and naturally can be found in willow bark. The most well-known
BHA is salicylic acid. Some authors claim that BHA's are stronger
exfoliants than AHA's, alpha hydroxy acids, and interestingly more gentle to the skin.
A salicylic cream is also facial pores-clearing and can help with
both treatment of blackheads and comedone clearance. Use of BHA's
alone for treatment of scarring is not very promising, even though
overall somewhat smoother skin is the net result of using a salicylic
acid cream for at least three months.
